Yoga Photography from our advertising shoot for The Bay Clubs in Los Angeles, CA. We were hired by AMF Media to create a library of images that The Bay Clubs could use for collateral, mailers and on their web site. They gave us the task of photographing five different locations in 3 days. Not an easy task in Los Angeles since it took a couple hours each day just to get from one location to another.

These yoga images are from a shoot we did for Jessica Valant in San Diego, CA. Jessica is a wonderful yoga and pilates coach and personal trainer. Check out her You Tube Page here.

Peak Performance in Fitness Photography – Los Angeles Fitness Photographer Robert Randall Productions

On photoshoots, what I am looking for is moments of peak experience or flow.  Those moments when an individual is 1000% invested in their activity and nothing, literally nothing has their attention except the task at hand”. That is “Direct Experience”and it is the driving force behind the work that we do.

“Direct Experience” is the reason I love to photograph athletes. Athletes understand total commitment and focus.  The photo shoots that we produce give these athletes both creative freedom and the time opportunity to move into a peak state of flow as we shoot.  It’s spontaneous, nothing is posed and the result are images that are powerful and authentic.

Direct Experience is also a major component of our creative process as a team during our photoshoots.  If you’ve ever been on set with me, you’d know that it’s a bit of a three ring circus.  If we’re doing our jobs right, the team is also working in a state of flow.  It’s not always pretty to watch and it can be pretty chaotic but I’ve found that some of the best ideas come from others on the set.  It never fails that when one of my assistant or stylists yells out hey… look at the light over there the whole team is scrambling over to that location and shooting frantically to capture it.  And that’s where the magic really happens. Because at that moment, the shot list goes right out the window and our team and the talent are working spontaneously to capture a  moment and you know that you’ve got it because no one is saying a word.  Well, except for me maybe because I tend you yell a lot when I know we got it!

We’re launching 2020 with a greater commitment to “direct experience” in our commercial and personal work than ever before.  What that means is pushing our creativity on every shoot. It means stretching the capabilities of our equipment and testing new ideas on every shoot. It means faster lenses, larger capture, drones, video and incredible, cinematic locations both here in the US and Internationally.

Whether you’re with a large, medium or small company or an individual looking to create new, brand specific imagery I hope you’ll come shoot with us. You’ll have a great experience!

Los Angeles Fitness Photographer Robert Randall Shoots for KEEPTIGHT GEAR in Denver, CO – REPOST

Visit us at Robert Randall Productions

Awhile back we were commissioned to shoot a new line of activewear produced in Denver, CO by KEEPTIGHT GEAR. It was a two day shoot, one day in the studio and one day in a local gym. These images are from our gym day with an amazing model/triathlete, Silvia Ribeiro. Since then, Silvia and I have worked together for a number of clients like CW-X Compression Gear and Renaissance Hotels by Marriott. Silvia is one of my favorite models to work with and is usually the first person I call anytime we need a model with incredible strength and beauty. Check out more of the work we’ve done together on my web site at: www.robertrandall.com

Here are some more images from Robert Randall Productions photo shoot for CW-X Compression Gear photographed at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. Courtney Hope (Actress – The Bold and The Beautiful) and Nick Denbeigh were our athletes for this part of our two day shoot. Both of them came to us from one of my favorite talent agencies to cast from It Model Management in Orange County, CA.

As usual we were in a “run and gun” situation all day long, both days which meant we had to keep equipment to a minimum. I shot with Nikon D750 (to keep the size down) and a AF-S Nikkor 24 – 70mm F2.8G  zoom lens and a AF-S Nikkor 70 – 200mm f2.8G ED VR II exclusively since, once again there was little time to be changing lenses all day.

For lighting at Red Rocks we used four Profoto B1X 500 Air Monolights along with one Profoto Beauty Dish and a Profoto Medium Soft Box. We also shot much of the day bare bulb as the light from B1X 500’s is really beautiful with out modifiers. My assistants were Drew Bennett and Frankie Spontelli. BOTH of these guys are insanely talented shooters so check our their respective web sites and Instagram Feeds.

Once again, special thanks to Karina Connelly (the brilliant Brand Director at CW-X ) for the opportunity. Also our incredible talent and my awesome assistants for going way up and above what I expected and for making this shoot so incredible and finally to the great folks at Red Rocks who let us take over their venues and play for the day.

We are preparing right now for another shoot with CW-X the first week in November in Southern California.

Once again CW-X Compression Gear gave us the opportunity to shoot both their Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter Campaigns for 2019. Our athletes this time came from Denver and Los Angeles. We had Maggie Ecker who came to us from Wilhelminadenver and Courtney Hope(Actress – The Bold and The Beautiful), Chris Reid and Nick Denbeigh, all from one of my favorite talent agencies to cast from It Model Management in Orange County, CA. Seriously, if you’re looking for great talent and some really great people to work with please call Linda or Marlene at IT. You won’t be disappointed. Hair/Make-up/Men’s grooming provided my immensely talented wife Dawn Randall. We shot at two amazing locations; Project Move Gym in Denver, CO and the always awesome place to shoot, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater in Morrison. CO.

All of our talent was extraordinary but I have to say the some of the moves, jumps, twists and turns that Courtney pulled out just blew us away. I’d say something lame like ” try something different” and then I couldn’t shoot fast enough. Unfortunately, much of the line hasn’t been release yet so I can’t show a lot of the insane work that our talent did… watch this space for more.

Courtney Hope and Nick Denbeigh lifestyle shot at Red Rocks

At Red Rocks we shot almost exclusively with two Profoto BWX 500 Air’s. One bare bulb and one with a Profoto Beauty Dish. This setup allowed us to work super fast while shooting the action plus the high speed sync and using the heads without modifiers allowed us to compete with the sun and produce some beautiful shots.

Special thanks to Karina Connelly (the brilliant Brand Director at CW-X ) who gives me these amazing opportunities and puts up with my impatience (on occasion). Thank you so much Karina. Also our incredible talent and my awesome assistants for going way up and above what I expected and for making this shoot so incredible and finally to the great folks at Project Move and the folks at Red Rocks who let us take over their venues and play for the day.

As indicated previously this is just a small sample of the images we made over two days. Watch this space for more..

Los Angeles Lifestyle Photographer Tests Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/1.4 ED

Visit us at Robert Randall Productions

Yesterday I spent a few hours in the afternoon testing my new Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/1.4 ED lens on my Nikon D750 while walking around Denver, CO where I spend about 30% of my time. I actually picked this lens up at Samy’s Camera in Orange County after my last commercial shoot two weeks ago but between traveling and editing I didn’t have time to really test this lens until now.

This baby did not disappoint. As a fitness, lifestyle, beauty, fashion and travel photographer working in Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County and Denver the 105mm focal length is a perfect go to lens (I shoot portraiture as well). It’s a beast (weight wise) but sharpness is unbelievable and the Bokeh is absolutely beautiful (I shot wide open at f/1.4 all day and the results were stunning).

Here are a few shots from the day… see for yourself.

CALIFORNIA COAST FINE ART SERIES

Visit our California Coast Gallery where you can view the entire series and purchase these limited edition fine art prints. Don’t forget to check back often as we are updating the gallery with new prints all of the time.

EPIC FITNESS SERIES

I am just starting on a new series of cinematic fitness/sports related images shot in harsh outdoor environments with athletes training with elements from the natural surroundings.  Boulders, tree trunks, etc…

THE TRAVELING LIFE

A new series of travel/lifestyle images highlighting the beauty, mystery and romance of the traveler’s life!

#WORK

A new portfolio of environmental portraits of individuals “working” and/or “playing” at their jobs. The goal of the project is to highlight people doing what could easily be defined either as “work” but to capture those individuals, so fully immersed in that activity (in a state of “flow”) that the line between work and play has blurred or vanished all together.

This project is in its infancy but I hope to make significant progress in 2019. Visit our current portfolio at robertrandall.com.

BEAUTY IN NATURAL LIGHT

I am currently shooting a new portfolio of beauty and fashion imagery lit only with direct, ambient or reflected sunlight. The majority of the images will be photographed on medium format film but no doubt opportunities will arise where some of the images will be shot digitally.

Check in at www.robertrandall.com for new work.

Awhile back we had the opportunity to photograph MMA Pro Cat Zingano at Alliance MMA Gym in San Diego’s Bario Logan neighorhood. It was a four day shoot, much of it simple, basic exercise shots but we had the great opportunity to photograph some killer workout shots of each fighter where we got to get real creative. If you’re in MMA, pick up a copy of “Train Like a Fighter. Cat has a lot to teach.

Fitness Professionals – Eight Questions for Finding the Best Los Angeles Fitness Photographer

Visit us at Robert Randall Productions

Los Angeles Fitness Photographers
Los Angeles Fitness Photographer Robert Randall Shoots Silvia Ribeiro

Everyday we get new inquiries from independent fitness professionals such as personal trainers, coaches, models, competitors, boutique gyms and specialty training facilities.  More often than not the first question we get is “I need some pictures, what is your rate”?  The problem with that question is that it doesn’t tell you anything about the photographer’s capabilities and more importantly, it doesn’t provide you with a solution to “your problem”.

What problem you ask?

Whatever problem you are trying to fix with new images.

If you’re a personal trainer that problem is likely attracting new clients. But who are your clients? What modalities are you training in? Is this going to be for a new web site? What’s your philosophy about training? How are you unique?

If you’re a fitness model you might be looking for an agent? Beside’s being fit and beautiful (if you’re competing for gig’s in Southern California that’s just the starting point). What are your specific skills? Basketball, track & field, bodybuilding, triathlon, etc…

If you’re a competitor when is your next show? Are you a body builder, fitness, bikini? What is the best aspect of your physique and how do you want to show that off in pictures.

All of these criteria make up your own unique “personal brand”. As a professional photographer it’s my job to craft images around your specific needs and goals so that at the end of the day you have a series of pictures that not only show off how amazing you look but fully differentiate you from the pack in the extremely competitive world of fitness. The result is Brand Specific Imagery.

WHAT IS BRAND SPECIFIC IMAGERY?

“Brand Specific Imagery” is unique to you and your brand and answers the question…

What is it about your specific talent, physique, training method/modality and philosophy that makes you unique in this highly competitive market?

Here are the questions I ask my clients before we ever schedule a shoot and the questions you should be asking yourself before you pick up the phone to contact a photography professional.

What is your USP (Unique Selling Proposition)? What about your service/offering is unique to the marketplace? How is your training style unique? You’re philosophy? What specific skills can you show off?

What physical/personal traits do you want to highlight? Are you a Bodybuilder? Triathlete? Cross Fit Athlete?  What aspect of your physique do you want to show off?

Who are you trying to attract? If you’re a personal trainer, who are your clients? What possible needs might they have? (I.E. Weight Loss, Endurance Training, Flexibility, etc…).

What kind of environment do you want to shoot at? Do you want to shoot at an outdoor location? Beach? Mountains? Desert? Downtown? What about the gym? Do you have a favorite gym? What kind of gym?

Will there be other people in the images? If you’re a personal trainer do you want shots of you training an individual, a group?

How many final images will you be needing? Specific formatting (Vertical vs Horizontal), for Instagram? FaceBook? Prints?

What is your budget? Production Value (the overall quality and uniqueness of an image) is directly affected by the resources we can bring to shoot? Special lighting equipment? Unique locations? Hair & Make-Up, Props, Additional Crew, etc…

What is your outcome?  Do you want to attract new clients? Is this for your new web site? Are you trying to attract an agent? Which agent? If this just for fun?

At Robert Randal Productions every photo shoot that we do is custom, based on your specific needs, goals and budget. We start with a 30 minute phone consultation to discuss your USP (unique selling proposition) and brand identity and then craft your personal photo shoot around those criteria.

Give us a call at (310) 736 – 0506 to discuss your new, unique, brand specific, photo shoot!
