More fitness photography from last year’s photoshoot for CW-X Compression Gear

Here are some of the images from our last photoshoot for CW-X Compression Gear that we haven’t been able to post until now. With fashion, fitness, activewear and any other apparel shoot there is usually a six month to one year lag between the time that we shoot and when the line actually rolls out. As such, we have to sit on the images until the line goes live. In this particular case however, these specific pieces were never put into production so I finally got the go ahead from Karina Connelly (CW-X amazing Brand Manager) to run these shots. I am really happy to be able to finally run these as I think a few of them are among the very best in the entire advertising campaign.

This shoot took place over two days at two different locations. The first day we shot at the San Clemente Beach Trail in San Clemente, CA and on day two we shot at Tuxedo Studios in Los Angeles, CA. As always, my Southern California crew; Tom Cisneros, Matt Davis and Elleveesa rocked the shoot and made my job extremely enjoyable.

Tuxedo Studios is an amazing space to shoot at and the owners are a real pleasure. The space is huge (you could potentially shoot a semi in there if the loading dock door was big enough). They have some amazing back drops constructed permanently in studio as well as tons of empty space with some beautiful concrete floors and wall. As you can see in these images the colors in the space are bold and fantastic. A great make-up/wardrobe room, client lounge, full kitchen facilities and a great space for catering and eating with clients and crew.

One the best things about my business is that I get to work with some of the most insanely talented athletes, models, actors, stuntmen, etc… in the business. We cast from several different agencies around the country (depending on where we are shooting) and this case these gals and guys came to us from Sports and Lifestyle Unlimited. We had four talent on this shoot from SLU. Theon Holland, Francis Brower, Zachary Staben and Melanie Boykin (not pictured on this post, check our May 22nd post for Melanie).

As I am writing this, on July 22nd, 2020 Covid – 19 is still raging around the country and and in particular my home state of California where we shoot a great deal of our work. The state is largely shut down again and of course the fitness industry has been hit extremely hard. While right now we can’t get into our usual gyms and studios to shoot we are working, shooting personal work and shooting for clients outside on location. It’s definitely a great time to shoot outside and promote you brand. On all of our photoshoots we adhere to strict Covid -19 protocols.

LA Fitness Photographer Shoots Action

CW-X Compression Gear is the premier compression gear company in the US today. They are also one of our most important clients. For the last several years we have been photographing their web and advertising campaigns and each shoot brings a new opportunity to create something beautiful. CW-X gives us a great deal of creative freedom and their Brand Manager, Karina Connelly is just amazing to work with. These images were taken at two different locations; San Clemente, CA and Tuxedo Studios in Los Angeles. We had the great opportunity to work with some amazing talent from Sports & Lifestyle Unlimited and of course my incredible Southern California production team Elleveesa , Matt Davis and Tom Cisneros. Side Note: If you’re a photographer, director or producer in the greater Southern California area do yourself a favor and go check out Tuxedo Studios. The place is amazing.

On photoshoots, what I am looking for is moments of peak experience or flow. Those moments when an individual is 1000% invested in their activity and nothing, literally nothing has their attention except the task at hand”. That is “Direct Experience”and it is the driving force behind the work that we do.

“Direct Experience” is the reason I love to photograph athletes. Athletes understand total commitment and focus. The photo shoots that we produce give these athletes both creative freedom and the time opportunity to move into a peak state of flow as we shoot. It’s spontaneous, nothing is posed and the result are images that are powerful and authentic.

Direct Experience is also a major component of our creative process as a team during our photoshoots. If you’ve ever been on set with me, you’d know that it’s a bit of a three ring circus. If we’re doing our jobs right, the team is also working in a state of flow. It’s not always pretty to watch and it can be pretty chaotic but I’ve found that some of the best ideas come from others on the set. It never fails that when one of my assistant or stylists yells out hey… look at the light over there the whole team is scrambling over to that location and shooting frantically to capture it. And that’s where the magic really happens. Because at that moment, the shot list goes right out the window and our team and the talent are working spontaneously to capture a moment and you know that you’ve got it because no one is saying a word. Well, except for me maybe because I tend you yell a lot when I know we got it!

We’re launching 2020 with a greater commitment to “direct experience” in our commercial and personal work than ever before. What that means is pushing our creativity on every shoot. It means stretching the capabilities of our equipment and testing new ideas on every shoot. It means faster lenses, larger capture, drones, video and incredible, cinematic locations both here in the US and Internationally.

Los Angeles Fitness Photographer shoots for CW-X Compression Gear In Colorado – Spring/Summer & Fall/Winter 2019

Once again CW-X Compression Gear gave us the opportunity to shoot both their Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter Campaigns for 2019. Our athletes this time came from Denver and Los Angeles. We had Maggie Ecker who came to us from Wilhelminadenver and Courtney Hope(Actress – The Bold and The Beautiful), Chris Reid and Nick Denbeigh, all from one of my favorite talent agencies to cast from It Model Management in Orange County, CA. Seriously, if you’re looking for great talent and some really great people to work with please call Linda or Marlene at IT. You won’t be disappointed. Hair/Make-up/Men’s grooming provided my immensely talented wife Dawn Randall. We shot at two amazing locations; Project Move Gym in Denver, CO and the always awesome place to shoot, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater in Morrison. CO.

All of our talent was extraordinary but I have to say the some of the moves, jumps, twists and turns that Courtney pulled out just blew us away. I’d say something lame like ” try something different” and then I couldn’t shoot fast enough. Unfortunately, much of the line hasn’t been release yet so I can’t show a lot of the insane work that our talent did… watch this space for more.

As usual we were in a “run and gun” situation all day long, both days which meant we had to keep equipment to a minimum. I shot with Nikon D750 (to keep the size down) and a AF-S Nikkor 24 – 70mm F2.8G zoom lens and a AF-S Nikkor 70 – 200mm f2.8G ED VR II exclusively since, once again there was little time to be changing lenses all day.

For lighting at Project Move we used four Profoto B1X 500 Air Monolights along with one Profoto Beauty Dish, A Profoto Medium Soft Box and two Profoto strip lights with grids. My assistants were Drew Bennett and Frankie Spontelli. BOTH of these guys are insanely talented shooters so check our their respective web sites and Instagram Feeds.

At Red Rocks we shot almost exclusively with two Profoto BWX 500 Air’s. One bare bulb and one with a Profoto Beauty Dish. This setup allowed us to work super fast while shooting the action plus the high speed sync and using the heads without modifiers allowed us to compete with the sun and produce some beautiful shots.

Special thanks to Karina Connelly (the brilliant Brand Director at CW-X ) who gives me these amazing opportunities and puts up with my impatience (on occasion). Thank you so much Karina. Also our incredible talent and my awesome assistants for going way up and above what I expected and for making this shoot so incredible and finally to the great folks at Project Move and the folks at Red Rocks who let us take over their venues and play for the day.

Yoga Photography from our advertising shoot for The Bay Clubs in Los Angeles, CA. We were hired by AMF Media to create a library of images that The Bay Clubs could use for collateral, mailers and on their web site. They gave us the task of photographing five different locations in 3 days. Not an easy task in Los Angeles since it took a couple hours each day just to get from one location to another.

These yoga images are from a shoot we did for Jessica Valant in San Diego, CA. Jessica is a wonderful yoga and pilates coach and personal trainer. Check out her You Tube Page here.

Splitting my time between Los Angeles and Denver enables me to shoot in some of the most incredible places you can imagine. One such place is Red Rocks Amphitheater and Park in Morrison, CO. In addition to being one of the most beautiful natural settings for concerts the park spreads out for several acres with the most incredible landscape. We’ve shot there with several individual athletes and personal trainers as well as with some top commercial clients such as CW-X Compression Gear. We just finished a shoot for CW-X Compression Gear here this month for their Fall/Winter line so watch this space for some incredible new images from Red Rocks Colorado.

Recent fitness and activewear photoshoot in Carlsbad, CA for CWX-Compression Wear. We had the great opportunity for work with this fabulous company and specifically their representative Karina Connelly who was unbelievably fun and to work with. As usual, the talent we hired was spectacular. Silvia Ribiero (whom I’ve worked with in several occasions came to me as direct hire and Jamie Silvermanthrough Otto Models in Los Angeles. My incredible Make-up/Hair Stylist Elvisa Sehic rocked the shoot as usual and my amazing crew, First Assistant Tom Cisneros and 2nd Assistant Matt Davis kept everything moving and me out of trouble.

Special thanks to the city of Carlsbad, CA that let us take over their boardwalk and Carlsbad State Beach for the day with not hassles whatsoever. (Little secret: San Diego county is the most production friendly city I’ve ever worked in and within about a 20 sq. mile radius you can shoot anywhere from city to sea to desert to rural to suburban and on and on and on).Just don’t let that get out or we’ll have photo and film crews down from LA crawling all over our beautiful city. Actually I love shooting in Los Angeles…. San Diego is just easier.

This is just a few of the shots from our shoot. There is a lot more to come since we shot all of the new Spring/Summer 19 gear and I can’t show that to you yet.
