I Recently had the chance to spend the morning with Lisa in San Diego. We put this together on a whim. As a result, we’re able to shoot completely spontaneously. Starting at her home in PB, the video became a story of her day. Next, we headed down to the Boardwalk. Shooting on the crowded boardwalk was chaotic but fun. Consequently, Lisa had to dodge the crowd and still look amazing doing it. Obviously, she did that!

Run and Gun

Shooting a fashion and beauty video without storyboarding or even a plan can be tricky. As a result, you never know if it’s going to actually work. Luckily for me, I was working with a pro. In other words, it didn’t matter. I really didn’t need to give any direction. I just had to keep up with her.

On the beach the biggest challenge was keeping tourists out of the frame. We shot several takes before getting what we needed. In addition, working with the wind and high morning sun presented their own problems. Keeping the sun and Lisa’s hair off of her face. Likewise, holding the highlights in her hair without blowing out the background.

The Park…

We wanted to get a different color pallet for some of the footage. As a result, we found a local park. I was struggling to come up with an idea that I thought would work with the rest of the footage. We needed some more close-ups. Lisa’s idea to spread her long hair the grass for a close-up was brilliant. Resulting in my favorite shot of the day.

Finally, we ended the day on the rooftop of her friends’ house. The sun had gone down a bit so it was a great time to get some more close-ups. Basically all I did was try to stay in focus while she came up with all of the looks.

Not a bad way to spend a Sunday!!!

Falling or Flying? Photoshoot with actress Courtney Hope by Los Angeles Fitness Photographer Robert Randall!

Last year we had the chance to shoot with the beautiful and talented actress Courtney Hope for CW-X Compression Gear. Courtney has starred in several films and has been a regular on daytime hits such as The Young and the Restless & The Bold and the Beautiful. What we didn’t know was what an amazing athlete she was with a background in competitive dance and as a fitness instructor in Los Angeles, CA.

The photoshoot was at the stunningly beautiful Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. As a fitness photographer, my team and I photograph world class athletes all of the time. This shoot surprised me however, in that there was really very little direction that I could give her. She had moves and grace and shapes that I’ve never seen before. To be honest, the entire shoot was me saying “try something else” and then frantically trying to keep up and squeeze the shutter at the peak moment. Throughout the day, Courtney literally appeared to defy gravity with leaps and jumps that seemed to hang in the air longer than physics should allow. It genuinely was impossible to tell if she was falling or flying.

More fitness photography from last year’s photoshoot for CW-X Compression Gear

Here are some of the images from our last photoshoot for CW-X Compression Gear that we haven’t been able to post until now. With fashion, fitness, activewear and any other apparel shoot there is usually a six month to one year lag between the time that we shoot and when the line actually rolls out. As such, we have to sit on the images until the line goes live. In this particular case however, these specific pieces were never put into production so I finally got the go ahead from Karina Connelly (CW-X amazing Brand Manager) to run these shots. I am really happy to be able to finally run these as I think a few of them are among the very best in the entire advertising campaign.

This shoot took place over two days at two different locations. The first day we shot at the San Clemente Beach Trail in San Clemente, CA and on day two we shot at Tuxedo Studios in Los Angeles, CA. As always, my Southern California crew; Tom Cisneros, Matt Davis and Elleveesa rocked the shoot and made my job extremely enjoyable.

Tuxedo Studios is an amazing space to shoot at and the owners are a real pleasure. The space is huge (you could potentially shoot a semi in there if the loading dock door was big enough). They have some amazing back drops constructed permanently in studio as well as tons of empty space with some beautiful concrete floors and wall. As you can see in these images the colors in the space are bold and fantastic. A great make-up/wardrobe room, client lounge, full kitchen facilities and a great space for catering and eating with clients and crew.

One the best things about my business is that I get to work with some of the most insanely talented athletes, models, actors, stuntmen, etc… in the business. We cast from several different agencies around the country (depending on where we are shooting) and this case these gals and guys came to us from Sports and Lifestyle Unlimited. We had four talent on this shoot from SLU. Theon Holland, Francis Brower, Zachary Staben and Melanie Boykin (not pictured on this post, check our May 22nd post for Melanie).

As I am writing this, on July 22nd, 2020 Covid – 19 is still raging around the country and and in particular my home state of California where we shoot a great deal of our work. The state is largely shut down again and of course the fitness industry has been hit extremely hard. While right now we can’t get into our usual gyms and studios to shoot we are working, shooting personal work and shooting for clients outside on location. It’s definitely a great time to shoot outside and promote you brand. On all of our photoshoots we adhere to strict Covid -19 protocols.

This portfolio includes some of our latest work from clients such as Marriott Hotels, CW-X Compression Gear, Reality Check, and The Bay Clubs in addition to other brands both large and small.

While we are still observing all “Stay at Home” recommendations we will be posting more work from this shoot as CW-X rolls out their new line. For the last several years we have been photographing their web and advertising campaigns and each shoot brings a new opportunity to create something beautiful. CW-X gives us a great deal of creative freedom and their Brand Manager, Karina Connelly is just amazing to work with. Hopefully we will be able to get out and shoot for them again fairly soon as these are some of the most fun projects that we do all year. These images were taken at two different locations; San Clemente, CA in Orange County and Tuxedo Studios in Los Angeles. We had the great opportunity to work with some amazing talent from Sports & Lifestyle Unlimited and of course my incredible Southern California production team Elleveesa, Matt Davis and Tom Cisneros.

Los Angeles Fitness Video Producer Robert Randall Shoot for Unlimited Fitness in Hermosa Beach, CA

In early February we had the great opportunity to shoot a new fitness video for the great people at Unlimited Fitness in Hermosa Beach, CA. The Coronavirus shutdown came right on the heels of this shoot but gave me extra time to get all of the editings done. Which tuned out was a good thing. Between my 2nd cameraman, Tom Cisneros, and myself we shot over 130 clips and over 2500 stills for 10 hours. During that time, eight classes came through the gym. It was a crazy, whirlwind day but it gave us tons of content to work with. I hope you enjoy this video.
